The Roman Forum was the center of social life in Ancient Rome. There was a forum in each Roman town and it was originally a square with public buildings around it. What is the Roman Forum? It's a 150x75 meters rectangular place where there was all public life in Rome: religious, political, social, economical.
In the Roman Forum there were meetings of the Senate, trials, elections, public feasts. Commerce, money lending, all kind of business found their center in the Roman Forum.
Obviously the Roman Forum changed during the centuries and some of it functions moved to other places but the importance of the Roman Forum as a symbol of Ancient Rome never declined.

Where was the Roman Forum built? Between the Capitoline Hill and the Palatine Hill there was in ancient times a marshy valley, crossed by streams, drained under Tarquinius Priscus, the fifth king of Rome with
the cloaca maxima, for the evacuation of waters into the Tiber. The Roman Forum was built in this drained area. The Regia was at the south-east border of the Roman Forum and has a trapezoidal form and although it was rebuilt many times the shape remained the same.
Its name derives from the fact that the Romans believed that here lived their kings but probably it's not true but it was for sure
the place where documents were kept, for example the annals and the calendar, and the Regia was also associated with the chief priest, the Pontifex Maximus.
The Sacred Way lead into the forum indicating the intertwining of religious life and civic life in the Roman Forum.
There were three major religious temples in the Roman Forum, dedicated to Castor, Saturn and Vesta. The Temple of Castor is near where the gods Castor and
Pollux gave water to their horses after a battle. The state treausury was housed in Temple of Saturn, that is not the original one but a rebuilding.
Vesta was the goddess of the hearth, the temple was round and it there was the sacred hearth fire of the state.
The original temple was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt many times.
The Curia, where meetings of the Roman senate were held, was rectangular and had a single room with bronze
doors facing the Forum at one end.
